The First Bridge, 2023
______
Captured from the Hanyang bank, this photograph shows the monumental steel trusses and massive stone piers of the Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge (武汉长江大桥 / Wǔhàn Chángjiāng Dàqiáo). Completed in 1957 as the first bridge across the Yangtze, it unified Hanyang and Wuchang, as well as catalyzed Wuhan as a strategic industrial hub of central China. The First Bridge also marks the legendary stunt of Chairman Mao Zedong’s famed 1966 swim -- a spectacle meant to showcase his vitality and rally the nation as the push for the Cultural Revolution gained new momentum.
